Okay, so let's say that you're working in a shared world, and there's an element of that world that has generally been glossed over, never had a good continuity between novels and games, and has little to no identity.

If you get the chance to redefine that element in a way that enhances that element and provides a good identity, would you do it knowing that it would come across as retroactive continuity?

Has anyone used this book in there crafting os story or adventure writing? I've heard this book come up a few times in conversations, most famously George Lucas when writing the original Star Wars trilogy. It looks like a great resource to help flesh out characters motivations and story. Though I can see it becoming predictable in it's broadest terms.

The Hero with a Thousand...

Dragonlance has the Cataclysm. Wheel of Time has the Breaking of the World. Bronze Canticles has the Binding of the Worlds. And I think, IIRC, that a lot of this is based on Tolkien's Middle Earth.

Question is, are Cataclysms, etc. overused in fantasy literature? Would the use of one in a new novel work out okay depending on how it was done, or would it just evoke groans from fans who have seen this theme overused?

Recently in Tracy's newsletter and podcast, he was talking about crafting systems of magic, and how physics came into play with it all.

I thought it would be good to open up the discussion a bit and see how people approached the craft of a new magic system.

To me, the big pitfall is coming up with a new idea. For example, elemental magic is cool, but it has been done to death. There are some cool variations of the theme though, such as Sovereign Stone and Legend of the Five...

As an up-and-coming writer, I find that I often look to certain people whose works I enjoy and respect as learning tools. One of the many reasons I'm a Tracy Hickman fan is that he's a vast encyclopedia of writing knowledge, and a person to watch.

Lately, I've been discovering another man of genius - Joss Whedon. I never got into Buffy, because at the time I thought it would be silly to do a serious show based on a not-so-serious movie (though I loved it). Turned out Buffy was a hit...

One thing I’ve been thinking about lately is how expletives (cussing) are used in writing.

I’ve often said that some of the funniest comedians are the ones who can make you laugh without dropping a four-letter word left and right. Likewise, I think some of the best stories are the ones that grip you without resulting in the dropping of the f-bomb.

At the same time, I recognize that there are times when an expletive may make a scene in a story better. “Gone With the Wind”...

I've noticed at times that people will use current events in stories, sometimes to good effect, sometimes to bad.

Generally, I believe in keeping thinly-veiled political messages out of story, as a person who reads said story (unless it's a political story to begin with) is reading for reasons other than politics. It's like going to a Dixie Chicks concert. If I went, I'd go for the music, not their political views.

That being said, though, there are events that happen...

I've written any number of types of articles between Sovereign Press and the Dragonlance Nexus. Some have been gaming, some are fluff, some are descriptions of organizations, and some are geography. So I've covered a wide spectrum of topics.

Why is it, then, that writing adventures scares the willies out of me? I'm not sure what it is exactly. Part of it is that writing an adventure is a bigger commitment than writing, for example, a prestige class. Part is trying to have challenges...
