I am curious about your position regarding the legal minefield known as "fan-fiction".

I am more or less aware of the manyfold legal implications fanfiction can have for the rightful copyright holders and know that this is a highly thorny subject for many writers (some of whom abhor the notion of somebody else using their worlds and characters for their own writing).
