There are three depictions of Patryn runes.
The first is in the portrait of Haplo with Dog in the "Previously on Death's Gate..." section of Hand of Chaos.
The second would be the on the sails of the dragonship shown on the cover of Serpent Mage.
The third would be the Death's Gate adventure game released by legend in the 90s.

I don't think any one of them is entirely accurate.
The runes in the portrait being too large to describe the effects of the runes (even taking into account the quasi-Heisenberg uncertainty barrier). However, I suppose it could be simply that it is drawn showing the larger structures of the rune-chains, either all that are present, or the activated sequences, and the details of the individual runes are lost into single Grey lines.
The runes shown on the dragonship, which depicts a scene I can't picture as ever being in the book (although it has been more than a few years) are more Asian-influenced/Kanji styled, which doesn't seem to synch up too well with the descriptions given them.
Similarly the video game's runes were very different, consisting mainly of curved lines, failing either to match the descriptions of them being individual runes, and of being insufficient descriptive capacity.

As you will discover, or more likely already have as your post is now three years old, Patryn runes as they exist on the body, have a single fountain rune, which they refer to as a heart rune.

I don't recall previously having read that they are tesselated Octagons and Squares, however, with a quick sketch, this would make sense as this would match up with the events of the final book when the Sartan and Patryn runes are said to complement each other, if we make the assumption that they are vertical chains of octagons, connected horrizontally with squares/rectangles, the "blank space" would form hexagons, the shape of Sartan runes.
