"The Immortals" deals with fear and loathing. When I read through it, it was one of those books I could not put down. I stayed in the library, reading it.

Tracy had dealt with a controversial subject: how people react to people who have AIDS. And he did it in a way most people would accept: as Science Fiction. If it was done in contemporary times, the effect is hard to imagine.

However, in light of what has happened to me and what I desired over the years, Tracy's initial ideas and his conversations over on how to write a book on prejudice is something I can see in a different light now.

I belong to the same church as Tracy, so I understand the talk both ways. At first, I agreed with the couple that Tracy spoke to about writing this book. At second, I agree with Tracy. Now, I see that Tracy was right to write this book and that the couple had made a (pre)judgement on Tracy's intentions purely based on a paradigm towards the children and youth (teenagers) of the Church.

And frankly, The Immortals is about prejudice than about AIDS. The book also deals with the Impact of AIDS on American Culture, and popular culture's Impact on sheeply thinking (a crowd, as a whole, thinks like a herd of sheep). I think that it reveals that Americans are normal human beings with normal foibles such as prejudice.

The Immortals is one of those books that deals with a controversial issue. In this case, the place of AIDS victims in our society and how we treat them as a whole. AIDS victims are treated in a variety of ways in American society. They are treated as monsters, honorless dogs, someone with a death warrant, or any number of ways. A person with AIDS feels like a Cancer patient; only they don't feel as much pain and they don't get a sympathy vote from everyone.

Yet Tracy doesn't know it, but his story strikes universally at the undercurrent of prejudice in this country. People can be unjustly prejudiced in America.
