Some would say to start with the chronicals first. Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winters Night, and Dragons of Spring Dawning. From there it is up
to you. Mostly it is up to you. But if you start from the begining of the timeline, you might get disapointed. Some of the books are a bit lame.

Frankly I say get the ones that interest you, don't worry too much about order. Most of the books are good enough to lay the setting. But if you are asking
for the main spine I'd say: Chronicles, Legends, Dragons of Summer Flame, then the War of Souls. (Actually I read Summer flame right after Chronicles
because I though it was the fourth because of the season theme. But It didn't mess thing up too much I just went "when did that happen" once in a
while when it referred to something that happened in Legends.)
The first Dragonlance book I ever read was War of the Lance (Book 3, Tales II I think), and then Firstborn (Book 1, Elven Nations Trilogy) which is one of my all time favorites. Chronologically the tales book jumps around and Firstborn takes place way before Chronicles. My favorites (outside the main spine which I recommend reading): All the tales. You will get a good flavor of all the kinds of Dragonlance books so you can decide which ones you like, (for example I like books about Kender, Gully Dwarfs and Gnomes (which happens to be a title of one of the tales books) better then books about the Knights.) Elven Nations Trilogy. The Siege of Mt. Nevermind. Tales of Uncle Trapsringer. |

My recommendation: Stick with the books Margaret and Tracy wrote, and the short story collections. There are a LOT of clunkers out there!
So. Chronicles (Dragons of Autumn, Dragons of Winter, Dragons of Spring), the Tales books (Magic of Krynn, Kender/Gnome/Gully Dwarves, Love and War), Tales II (Fall of Istar, Cataclysm, War of the Lance), Legends (all the Twins books, I don't remember the order), and then concluding with Dragons of Summer Flame. After that, you should hit the Lost Chronicles (Dwarven Depths, Highlord Skies, and Hourglass Mage if/when it sees print). I haven't read books set after Summer Flame - just lacked interest - so I'll leave commenting on those to others. |

Hello, I'm new to these boards this is my first post here. I've posted this exact same message on a different board. So if you've seen it before
that why. I thought it would be helpful here as well.
After reading almost every Forgotten Realms book, I've finally picked up, Dragons of Autumn Twilight. My only regret is that I do not have enough time to read it more! Many many years ago, I picked up a random Dragonlance book, not knowing any of the characters or backstory. It was awful. I probably only managed to get through 3 or 4 chapters before I was completely lost. I set it down and never picked up another Dragonlance book up until this past week. Older and wiser, this time around, I did it properly and started at book 1. I borrowed this suggested reading order from another website and cleaned it up a bit for posting. So here it is. Dragonlance Chronicles By Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman Dragons of Autumn Twilight Dragons of Winter Night Dragons of Spring Dawning Dragonlance Legends By Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman Time of the Twins War of the Twins Test of the Twins Lost Chronicles By Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman Dragons of the Dwarven Depths Dragons of the Highlord Skies Second Generation By Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman Second Generation Dragons of Summer Flame Dragons of a New Age by Jean Rabe Dawning of a New Age, The Day of the Tempest, The Eve of the Maelstrom, The Dhamon Saga by Jean Rabe Downfall Betrayal Redemption Dragonlance: War of the Souls By Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman Dragons of a Fallen Sun Dragons of a Lost Star Dragons of a Vanished Moon The Dark Disciple By Margaret Weis Amber and Ashes Amber and Iron Amber and Blood Heroes By various authors The Legend of Huma Stormblade Weasel's Luck Kaz the Minotaur The Gates of Thorbardin Galen Beknighted Kingpriest Trilogy By Chris Pierson Chosen of the Gods Divine Hammer Sacred Fire Once you've read all of these core series, there really isn't a reading order. In no particular order: the Raistlin Chronicles, Tales, Elven Nations, Dwarven Nations, Kang's Regiment, and the Defenders of Magic. |

I've gotten more and more picky over the years. Here's my list now.
Dragons of Autumn Twilight Dragons of Winter Night Dragons of Spring Dawning Time of the Twins War of the Twins Test of the Twins The Magic of Krynn Kender, Gully Dwarves, and Gnomes Love and War The Second Generation Lord Toede Dragons of Summer Flame Theros Ironfeld The Doom Brigade Dragons of Chaos Brothers in Arms The Odyssey of Gilthanas Dragons of a Fallen Sun Draconian Measures Dragons of a Lost Star Chosen of the Gods Dragons of a Vanished Moon Divine Hammer Sacred Fire Amber and Ashes Amber and Iron Amber and Blood Still could use some paring down, I guess, but it only takes up about one shelf. |
